Biography

After obtaining his M.Sc. degree in Physics from Calcutta University with First Class(1990 batch, result published 1991)Dr. Pal joined as a Junior Research Fellow at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata in 1992 by clearing the required National Eligibility Test (NET)conducted by CSIR, India. He carried out his research work there and got Ph.D. degree in 1997. He started his Post-Doctoral venture with a short term assignment at University of Roma, Italyunder the framework of an Indo-Italy exchange project. He successfully completed the prestigious Science and Technology Association (STA) fellowshipof Govt.of Japan during 1998-2000. He also made a short term visit to Kotel’nikov Institute of Radio-engineering and Electronics, MOSCOWunder an Indo-Russian exchange projectto carry out some research work on Microwave absorption study of some perovskite based functional nanocomposites prepared by chemical route.

Dr. Pal joined as a Lecturer in Physics at The University of Burdwanin May 2002 in Solid State Physics group and prompted to Senior Lecturer, Assistant Professor (grade three) in the same Department. He moved to CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CMERI),Durgapur,a premier research institute,in 2010 as Principal Scientist (senior scale).Presently, he is a Senior Principal Scientist(Professor)at CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR-CGCRI), Kolkataand fully involved in various activities in the area of nanomaterials based semiconductor gas sensors prepared by chemical route for monitoring environment and human health.

For around 25 years he has been doing research in the area of Nanomaterials precisely functional nanocomposites including multiferroic nanocomposites, magnetic nanocomposites, spintronics material, perovskite, glass and glass-ceramics.In these fields, so far, he has published more than100research articlesin the International Journals of high repute. Dr. Palhas supervised 6 Ph.D.’s, 2candidatesare in the pipelines. He completed 7 MajorResearch Projects and 3 are ongoing sanctioned by National funding agencieslike Department of Science and Technology (DST), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India, New Delhi. He contributed 5 Chaptersin the different important books including Encyclopaedia on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. He has also delivered several Plenary talks in the conferences, acted as a Chairmanfor various technical sessions and also organised many conferencesin various capacities.

He has been serving as one of the potential Referees to various International leading Journals of ACS, RSC, Elsevier, Springer-verlag, Wiley and many Indian journals. He is a Life member of several  research society and serving /served as key members in various research bodies. To mention few, he has served as an Advisory Board member of South African Nanoscience Initiative (SANi).Also, he was an important Executive committee member of West Bengal State Council of Science and Technology. Dr. Pal served as Member in Apex body (court) of The University of Burdwan,Planning committee member of West Bengal State Council of Science and Technology. He received Materials Research Society of India (MRSI)Medalin 2016.Dr. Pal became a Fellow of West Bengal Academy of Science and Technology in 2018.
